6 Tips for Capsule Home Decorating

I used to spend way too much money on home decor. I loved the changing seasons and checking out the latest seasonal décor.

Fresh, vibrant pillows for spring? Yes, please!

All colorful summer patio must haves? Sign me up!

And let’s not forget about my weakness: Bullseye’s Playground at Target! I started running out of space to not only display my items, but I also ran out of places to store the off season/holiday items in my basement.

My totes and shelves were full. I knew I had a problem that I needed to fix.

You’ve probably heard of capsule wardrobes and might even have them yourself. According to Susie Faux, a capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don’t go out of fashion.

In a capsule wardrobe, you have a few staple pieces you wear all the time for that season. The goal is to not only saving money on constantly purchasing too many shoes and dresses, but it’s also meant to save space in our closets.

I decided if we can save money and have minimal clothing pieces for our capsule wardrobes, why can’t I apply this same concept to my home decor obsession?

6 Tips for Capsule Home Decorating

Here are a few ways I have learned to save space and money in my home.

Chalkboards are a perfect item to have in your capsule home decor. You can hand letter quotes, happy birthday messages, draw florals for spring, or a little winter wonderland scene for the holidays. Chalkboards are easy to move room to room when you feel like you need to freshen your space up. I love chalkboards with beautiful frames because if my kiddos ever get a hold of them and want to add their own creations, it still looks pretty!

2. Baskets

I love baskets! They are a must-have staple in your home decorating capsule. I have many different types of baskets including wire, woven, and canvas ones. Not only are they pretty to look at, but they help you organize! You can use them to store blankets, books, and toys. We even have one in our bathroom for extra toilet paper.

3. Reversible signs

Reversible signs are so genius. I feel I’m getting my money’s worth because it’s like two purchases in one. For example, buy or make a sign that says “Happy Thanksgiving” on one side and on the back have it say “Merry Christmas”.  Or perhaps use two of your favorite quotes, one on each side.

Who says cake stands are just for cakes? Who says tiered stands are just for entertaining with food? I like to use cake stands all over my home as a way to add height to my space. I also love changing out the fillers in my tiered stands depending on the season.

5. Pick a general color scheme

I like to use red for decorating for my front porch and back patio. I can use the same red lanterns and outdoor cushions for Valentines, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, fall, and Christmas.

6. Shop your house!

When I get the urge to redecorate but I don’t want to spend a fortune on new items, I just shop my home! I move vases, frames, pottery, etc around to make my space(s) feel new and fresh. I have a few totes in my basement where I store things that aren’t being displayed in my home at that moment. Whenever I go through my different items in their totes I think, “Hey, I forgot about this!” So it feels- kinda sorta- brand new!

Nicole grew up in Iowa. After working in the corporate world for a few years she became a stay at home mama in 2010 (then again in 2012 and 2014). She spends her days refereeing sibling squabbles, going on adventures with her kids, buying stock in Band-Aids, and wondering how everything in her house got so sticky.

Nicole owns Sweet Harper Designs where she creates handmade signs and blogs about anything crafting/DIY related. When she isn’t in mom mode Nicole likes to be creative, enjoy girls’ night outs, and binge watch Netflix with her husband.
