Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines

The Science Center of Iowa is in the heart of downtown Des Moines. It is one of my family’s favorite places to go! It’s great because it caters to kids of all ages! My 9 year old could play all day as well as my one year old.  There are so many fun, hands-on exhibits to explore that keep everyone busy!

Hands-On Exhibits

The traveling exhibit is Pterosaurs, and let me tell you it is so cool! We learned Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, but in fact the dinosaur’s cousin. This area is filled with interactive experiences and even a virtual wind tunnel. The exhibit is the largest of its kind in the U.S. and will be at the Science Center until April 27.

There are so many different exhibits, but one of our favorites is Small Discoveries. This area is great for the younger kiddos to enjoy grocery shopping and a farm experience.  They recently added a fun music hall, chicken coop and apple orchard for even more exploring.

The Brick-by-Brick exhibit is another favorite. Here everyone can check out the structures built of Legos as well as build their own masterpieces. Of course, we are competitive and must see whose creation can sustain an earthquake!

  • The Maker’s Studio includes fun area to build structures out of cardboard.
  • What on Earth is especially fun for your child who loves animals. They have a variety of cold-blooded animals and even a beehive!
  • Checkout the WHO Weather Studio for a live weather broadcast at noon on Friday’s.

The Science Center recently updated the When Things Get Moving area. You can build paper rockets, explore the famous ball wall, and learn about momentum and friction.

There is so much more to explore while at the Science Center! Find the Planetarium, a Star Theater, upstairs in the Why the Sky exhibit. Don’t miss a story time under the stars!

More programs include: day camps, pint-sized science, and even Mixology nights for adults.

Tips for visiting the Science Center:

  • There is no longer a café, but snacks can be purchased in the A-Ha Store.
  • Parking is best in the ramp across the street for only $2 for the first hour, $1 for each additional hour
  • Hours: Wednesday – Sunday 9am to 4 pm
  • Purchase your tickets in advance
