Des Moines Mom regularly highlights local nonprofits. There are so many amazing organizations in our community dedicated to looking out for the well being of all who live here. We want to feature them and share ways you and your family can partner with them through volunteering, giving donations, and attending amazing (now, virtual) fundraising events. If you know of a nonprofit we should feature, please email [email protected].

childserveChildServe knows kids and specialty healthcare. When parents have questions about their child’s health and development, their team of experts helps identify and meet the unique needs of each child. They offer support, resources, and expert care to help families and children adapt to life’s challenges and reach individual goals for success.

From humble beginnings 92 years ago, ChildServe has grown into the largest pediatric rehabilitation provider of its kind in the Midwest. Now serving more than 4,600 children each year through over 30 services in four locations throughout the state. They are experts in pediatric rehabilitation and care for children and young adults who have a wide variety of developmental delays, disabilities, injuries, and other special healthcare needs.

They’ve been told time and again by visiting physicians and accreditation programs that ChildServe is ‘one of a kind’ not just in central Iowa but also in the nation. They are proud to offer this level of expertise to help children in Iowa live a great life.

Mission Statement

Partner with families to help children with special healthcare needs live a great life.

Get Involved with ChildServe

ChildServe volunteers get paid in smiles! There are a variety of rewarding ways to make
a difference. Currently, volunteer opportunities are all virtual right now, and they look forward to having our amazing volunteers on site again when it’s safe to do so.

Traditionally, ChildServe’s in-person volunteer opportunities might include any activities
kids love, like taking walks, playing games, doing crafts or reading a book. You don’t
need a medical background or special skills (we’ll leave that to our expert team
members), you just need to enjoy helping kids be kids. If you volunteer as a group to
tackle a special project, you might make hand-tied blankets, help with a landscaping
project, and more – there are endless ways to make a difference!

Ways to Give

Donations to ChildServe provide specialized equipment, life-changing technology, and
accessible transportation to help children reach their full potential and stay active in their
community. We’re intentional about listening to parents and using their feedback to fill gaps in care.

Many ChildServe clinics and programs that now serve hundreds of
children each year began with the support of donors to address needs that were
previously unmet. All donations benefit children with special healthcare needs and often
impact not only them, but their family as well.

The spirit of a child is wonder, curiosity, love, and joy. It’s this spirit that enables a child to look at a plain, empty cardboard box and imagine a rocket ship instead, says ChildServe CEO, Teri Wahlig, MD. When we look at the children we serve, we see their inner spirit first, no matter their abilities. Our belief in the spirit of a child is the reason we work so hard on our mission. From the incredible families and children we serve, to our team members, donors, and supporters in the community, it takes all of us moving forward together to help kids with special healthcare needs live a great life.
