Ongoing Events in Des Moines

Tuesday & Thursdays | Toddler Time, Get Air
10 a.m.
Little jumpers get special access to the trampolines on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Admission is $8.99 (free for a parent). It’s a great way to burn some winter energy!

Thursdays | Caterpillar Club, Reiman Gardens in Ames
Get outside and have some fun with a weekly storytime at Reiman Gardens. This program is designed for kids ages 2-5 with an adult. Program is included with general admission to Reiman Gardens.

Thursdays | Tot Town, Valley Community Center
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Bring the little ones out to play at the Valley Community Center. This event is free.

Thursdays | Imagination Station, Valley Community Center
9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Get crafty with your kids (without any mess in your house). Each week you’ll make a different craft. 

2nd Monday of the Month | Storytime with Ruby the Reading Red Panda, Blank Park Zoo
11 a.m.
Each month they read a story and you get to meet a special live ambassador animal from the Zoo’s education department.

1st Thursday of the Month | Toddler Tales, Jester Park Nature Center
Let your imagination run wild with this nature-themed story time. Hear a story followed by the naturalist’s choice of an activity such as an animal encounter, puppets, or a craft. This event is designed for ages 3 and up.

Once a Month on Wednesdays | Knee-High Naturalists, Jester Park Nature Center
Are you ready to get outside and explore? Come and hear a story followed by some outdoor fun! As naturalists, you will hike, investigate, and navigate the trails and grounds of Jester Park as you learn what makes the outdoors such an amazing place. Dress to be outside. Cost is free; registration is required.

First and Third Fridays | New Moms Postpartum Support Group, Waukee Wellness & Chiropractic
A safe and welcoming space where you can connect with other new moms who are going through similar experiences.

Things to do in Des Moines in June 2024

June 1 | Summer Kick Off – Des Moines, Nebraska Furniture Mart
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Celebrate the start of Summer with carnival games, inflatables, prizes, food trucks, and much more! Whip Delight – Dole Soft Serve & Iiawah Grill will be joining for the event.

June 1 | Des Moines pools open! Check out our guide to area pools.

June 1 | Family Fest, Johnston Town Center
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Come out for an afternoon of family fun. There will be various FREE activities including, a bounce house, face painting, balloon animals, magic show, yard games, and more.

June 2 | Des Moines Children’s Museum 7th Birthday Party, Heritage Carousel
3 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Celebrate with children’s activities, vendors, free cake, and unlimited rides on the carousel. The party ends with a foam machine!

June 2 | Beautiful Land Pop-Up Market, Fareway – Downtown Ames
11 a.m. – 4 p.m
A carefully curated market featuring over 50 local makers, vintage collectors, food trucks, and live music in the heart of Ames. 

June 2 | Trek the Parks Kick-Off Party, The Brenton Arboretum
12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
ick off the SEVENTH Central Iowa Trek the Parks Challenge at The Brenton Arboretum. Enjoy fun activities and free popsicles (while supplies last). No registration is required. Enjoy ‘Go Hug a Tree’ activity with The Brenton Arboretum, a fun activity with Muddy Boots and binSpire LLC, and a special appearance from Bluey.

June 4 | Iowa Cubs vs Mud Hens, Principal Park
6:38 p.m.
Catch a game, plus bring your pup to the park and have a howlin’ good time with your furry friend.

June 5 | Ankeny Food Truck Fest, Prairie Ridge Church
5 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Ankeny Food Truck Fest is back. With a lineup of 10 food trucks, yard games, inflatables, laser tag, live performances, and live music by Brian Herrin.

June 6 | Family Skate Night, Brenton Skating Plaza
5 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Bring your skates or rollerblades and enjoy the ultimate summer roller rink experience with upbeat music and stunning city views.

June 6, 13, 20, 27 | Beats & Eats, Ankeny Market & Pavilion

5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Join in at the Ankeny Market & Pavilion (AMP) Thursday nights this summer for food trucks, live music and entertainment, family activities, games, beer truck, and more!

June 6-8 | Governors Days, Grimes
Governors Days is a family favorite summer festival in the Des Moines area. Complete with concerts, parades, carnivals, and much more. Admission to the festival is free.

June 6, 13, 20, 27 | Summer Concert Series, Jasper Winery
6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Bring the whole family or plan a grown-up night out at Jasper Winery. This event is free, and you can bring a picnic or purchase food from onsite food trucks. Plan to bring blankets or lawn chairs. Wine, beer, and sangria are available for purchase. 

June 7 | Wine & Craft Beer Fest, Altoona’s Enabling Garden
5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Plan a night out at Altoona’s Wine & Craft Beer Fest. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the gate.

June 7-9 | Free Fishing Days
Introduce your family to the fun of fishing this weekend. No license needed!

June 7-9 | Pride Fest, Des Moines
Capital City Pride welcomes everyone to their annual PrideFest with headliners Rebecca Black, “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” Season 5 winner Shea Couleé, “Drag Race” Hall of Famer Monet X Change, and a DJ set from Gottmik.

June 8 | Raccoon River PALOOZA, Raccoon River Park
8 a.m.
Celebrate the West Des Moines community and outdoor recreation with live music, cardboard boat races, a vendor fair with fun activities for kids, a beverage tent featuring craft beer, food trucks, and more!

June 7-16 | Love You Des Moines Days, Valley Community Center
From Lego building and bike riding to art classes and video gameplay, there are hundreds of activities for the family to enjoy during this 9-day celebration. 

June 8 | Waukee Palooza, Hy-Vee, Waukee
4:30 p.m. – 10 p.m.
This third annual music festival features a silent auction, 50/50 raffles, food trucks, and music from Western Outlaws, Burning Sensation, and Cover That.

June 9-15 | Art Week Des Moines
Art Week Des Moines celebrates local artists, encouraging venues and organizations to host artist-involved events that engage and inspire our community. Follow them on Facebook to keep up with the details on the events throughout town.

June 12, 19, 26 | Storytime Under the Green Umbrella, Cowles Commons
10 a.m.
Enjoy a playful sharing of songs and stories for toddlers, preschoolers and early elementary-aged youth accompanied by their fun-loving grownups. This is a FREE outdoor event!

June 13-15 | Johnston Green Days, Terra Park
Experience the joy of summer festivals in Johnston with a parade, carnival, live entertainment, interactive games for kids, and so much more. Admission is free.

June 14 | Twilight Run, Waveland Golf Course
7:30 p.m.
The most unique race in Iowa is back for a fifth year. Choose your course, 9 holes or 18, and run or walk the rolling cart paths at beautiful Waveland Golf Course as the sun sets. Participants will receive an ice cream treat, pizza, a cold drink, and a glow stick to help light their way.

June 14 | ANTS, Heritage Park in Grimes
4:40 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Ants is an interactive performance that brings children together to explore the landscape around them. Ants as big as humans work together intently with hundreds of giant bread crumbs, using sound and movement to communicate, and children are irresistibly drawn closer to find out how they can join in.

June 15 | Neighbors Day, Western Gateway Park
Iowa Juneteenth Observance Presents Neighbor’s Day, a celebration featuring a parade, live music, children’s activities, food, and more! Or check out other ways to celebrate Juneteenth in Des Moines.

June 15 | Dog Yoga, Ignit Sports & Fitness
10 a.m.
Ignit Studio is partnering with Heinz 57 Pet Rescue & Transport to put on a dog yoga event!
Please do not bring your dogs, as the shelter provides the furry friends. You may bring a mat if you have one, props are provided as well.

June 22 | Pollinator Fest, Reiman Gardens
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  
Celebrate National Pollinator Week. Visit a variety of fun and educational displays, including live pollinators and plants, and interactive pollinator-themed activities. This event will happen rain or shine.

June 22 | Climb Out of the Darkness, Campbell Park in Clive
9:30 a.m.
Raising awareness for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, The Climb brings communities together to shine a light on a darkness we often don’t speak about. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders are the most common complication of childbearing.

June 23 | Wishes On Deck, Southeast Polk High School
4 p.m.
A family-friendly game with all proceeds helping Make A Wish grant more wishes than ever before. High-profile players from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa will go head-to-head to have a great time and raise these critical funds for children in our community.

June 24 | Cajun Fest, Cowles Commons
11 a.m.
Join in for a day filled with all-you-can-eat crawfish, lively music, special entertainment, and the option to purchase whatever else you’re hungry for from various local vendors selling Cajun classics (with a twist).

June 26 | Sip and Stroll, Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden
5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Celebrate the season with a glass of wine and a walk through the Botanical Garden. Learn about what is in bloom, what is coming soon, and timely updates from the Director of Horticulture Aaron Harpold. All participants must be at least 21 years of age. Registration required. Members $17, Nonmembers $20

June 28-30 | Des Moines Arts Festival, Western Gateway Park
Des Moines Arts Festival is celebrating 25 years with extra fun events this year! Immerse yourself in art from talented vendors and enjoy live music and food trucks. The interactive Creative Zone is always the kids’ favorite stop at the festival.

June 30 | Dancing on Cowles Commons, Cowles Commons
9 a.m.
Des Moines Performing Arts invites you to join a dance party! MixxedFit® is a people-inspired fitness program that combines explosive dance moves with body weight toning. This class will get your heart rate up while you get down to yesterday’s & today’s hits for FREE.
