It’s time for summer fun! Here are family-friendly events you can enjoy from home and a few in-person events too.
Guidelines are changing weekly, so be sure to confirm with the host organization that their in-person events are still happening before you go. We also encourage you to practice safe social distancing measures when in public.
JUNE EVENTS in Des Moines
June 1-30 | Blank Park Zoo
The Blank Park Zoo has reopened, but all visitors need to reserve a specific time slot when they purchase tickets. (Members also need to make a reservation). Masks are encouraged for all visitors over 2 years old. If you aren’t ready to visit the zoo in person, they also have great at-home lessons available online. If Zoo Brew is a favorite summer adults-night out, you can join a virtual Zoo Brew on June 3.
June 1-30 | Baby Goats Bottle Feeding, Howell’s Pumpkin Patch
Visit Howell’s Pumpkin Patch Facebook site to buy tickets to their baby goat bottle feeding and playtimes. The first round of tickets sold out quickly, so keep an eye out for the next sale and enjoy a day at the farm with the baby goats.
June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 | Rhyme Time Bedtime with Johnston Public Library (online)

Snuggle up on Monday evenings and listen to rhymes, songs, and finger plays as you get ready for bed.
June 1-5 | Just Between Friends Consignment Sale (online)
Enjoy the convenience of shopping from home with consignment prices. Everything you order online will be bundled and ready for curbside pick up at Jordan Creek Mall.
June 3, 10, 17, 24 | Storytime Online with Waukee Public Library (online)
There are new stories, songs, and activities added each week to this wonderful online resource from the Waukee Public Library.
June 4 | Curbside Kona Ice in West Des Moines, Urbandale, Waukee, and Clive
Kona Ice is going to be in your area! Put in your order by June 3, and they will deliver it to your driveway on June 4. It’s a great way to kick off the summer! Minimum order of $12. Check the schedule for dates in other Central Iowa locations.

Grab your crafting supplies and get ready to make a clothespin dragonfly on June 8, or any day after the video goes online. Check back each week for new creative crafting ideas.
June 12 | Live Theatre Drive-In, Des Moines Playhouse
Starting June 12 and continuing nearly every weekend through Aug. 15, The Playhouse will present three, two-person cast plays in its parking lot. The audience can remain safely in their cars listening via a radio frequency, just like at drive-in movie theatres. Tickets are pay-what-you-can, but reservations are required as space is limited.
June 12-15 | Vintage & Made Fair (online)
This year the Vintage & Made Fair is hosting a virtual summer edition that is an online market featuring antique and vintage home décor, jewelry, handcrafted goods, and everything you need to create a vintage and handmade lifestyle. You can shop 24/7 during the event while supporting small businesses.
June 15-19 | Young Writer’s Workshop (online)
Does your older kid love to write stories? Help them jumpstart their creative writing with a week-long online writer’s workshop for grades 7 to 12. Register by June 8 and they will participate in ice breakers and will get a chance to share their writing with the group.
June 19-26 | Art Week Des Moines (online)
If you’re disappointed that the Arts Festival is canceled, you can still get a big dose of art with an online art showcase. Local artists will share their unique creative works. Check out the schedule for more details as they confirm the new online format.
