Waukee Community School District Transitional Kindergarten Program

Kindergarten is an exciting milestone in your child’s life. But as a mom, you might be asking yourself, Is my child ready? Will they be able to make friends, follow instructions, and handle classroom routines? Maybe they’re a little shy, or they have a late birthday. If you’re on the fence about whether your child is ready to start kindergarten, you’re not alone.

That’s why Waukee Community School District is launching a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Program in the 2025-26 school year. TK offers children an extra year of support to prepare for kindergarten in a way that feels right for them — and you.

What is Transitional Kindergarten?

Transitional kindergarten is designed for children who are kindergarten aged (5 years old by Sept. 15, 2025) but could benefit from a bridge between preschool and kindergarten. The program provides a gentle introduction to academics at an appropriate pace for your child.

TK isn’t a replacement for kindergarten — students will move on to kindergarten the following year. However, it’s perfect for children who may need more time to develop academic skills, build confidence, or simply adjust to the school environment.

What are the Benefits?

If you’re wondering whether TK is the right fit for your child, here are a few things to think about:

  • Smaller Class Sizes: With a lower student-to-teacher ratio, TK gives kids the opportunity to get more personalized attention in a nurturing environment.
  • Focus on Social & Emotional Development: TK helps children develop important social skills like teamwork, communication, and independence.
  • Adjusted Academic Pace: The program introduces core subjects like reading and math with extra space for children to absorb the material.
  • Familiar School Environment: TK students will attend Waukee CSD elementary schools and follow the K-5 schedule, giving them a smooth transition the following year. Plus, they’ll enjoy specials like art, music, and P.E. that make learning fun.
  • Tuition-Free: The TK program is part of the Waukee CSD public school system, so it’s tuition-free! Children are eligible for transportation and before/after school childcare just like other students.

One of the most exciting aspects of the Waukee CSD TK program is that it’s built on the same foundation of excellence that makes Waukee schools so great. With outstanding teachers, top-notch facilities, and a commitment to meeting the needs of every child, Waukee CSD ensures that your child will have a fun and engaging learning experience.

How to Enroll

Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year opens on Jan. 14, and families are encouraged to register as soon as possible. The TK program is also available for open enrollment if you live outside the District.
